Scotty's Uses Nike+ Fuelbands

He runs 5 miles 6 days per week.  He lifts weights for an hour 5 days a week.  Who has that kind of time and dedication?  Scott Wise has always believed a healthy body has a great affect and impact on a healthy mind and attitude.

"I'm a little obsessive-compulsive," said Scott Wise, President/CEO of a Pots & Pans Production. "But, if I can make it work with 9 restaurants to watch over and 4 kids under the age of 5, I know others can carve out a window in their schedule to get active.  I wake up at 5:30 am every day to make it happen and I'm not in bed until 11:30 every night."

Wise has encouraged his employees to exercise with creative employee benefits like company paid health club memberships, reimbursement for Pilates, Kickboxing, Spinning, Zumba, Yoga and reimbursements for completing races, like the Indy Mini, Geist Half Marathon, Bloomington Half Marathon, Mudathalon and more.

BandStarting in July a group of management will begin the most creative challenge yet, by tracking all their activity with the New Nike+ Fuel Bands.

Wise recently transitioned their company paid health insurance provider over to an HSA (Health Savings Account) plan.  With the continual increase in health care costs for small business owners, Wise wanted to find a plan that would offer the correct benefits to his employees; but, also put some extra efforts on the employee's part to decide if medical care is needed or if that cold is just "the sniffles" and they would rather keep that money in their account to have at the end of the year to use for something else.

"I love the ideas behind the HSA plans," said Wise.  "We encourage a healthy life style, we give more cash in your HSA for participating to make your lifestyle healthier with better choices and exercise and then letting the employee choose whether a doctor visit is necessary or keeping money in their account for other future use is a great way to mediate the health care system."

"I am always looking for ways to motivate our employees to be healthier," said Wise, "I love technology and when I saw this device I knew it was something that could help people with their exercise programs, especially when I saw how it could sync with their company paid iPhones to track progress.  I also think the spirit of competition always can be a great motivator to encourage participation.  Of course, cash for participation always works too."

Scotty's Featured on WTHR (NBC) "Scotty's is a cutting edge employer when it comes to the restaurant and service industry," said Paul Ashley, Benefits Advisor for First Person Benefit Advisors. "This is just one more thing that shows how much they care about their employees, investing in them in a way that changes their lives"

Over 50 members of the management team choose to participate in the program. Over the next 3 months the cost of the $150 band will be deducted from their paychecks, however as long as they meet certain goals they will be completely reimbursed at the end of the challenge. Not only will they get their money back, but Scotty's will deposit an additional $150 into each participants Health Savings Accounts.

"Healthy employees are extremely important to me," continue Wise. "Self confidence is a great by-product of a healthy lifestyle.  I think this attitude is necessary in every one of my directors and leaders in this company.  And, not only will my people feel better, but I find that they perform better at work, too.  With the rising costs of health care, the healthier our staff is, the better our insurance premiums can be as well."

FuleDuring the first month employees will be encouraged to go about their normal routines, measuring their Nike Fuel points and setting goals accordingly. At the completion of the first month, their individuals points will be reviewed and we will set an activity level increase goal of 5-10% for the second month day period. At the completion of the second month, their individual points will be review and we will set an activity level increase of 10-20% for the third month.

There is also the ability for Scotty's to have a Nike+ community so employees can compete against one another, motivate other members and track their progress as a team.  They hope to even challenge other companies and their own individual restaurant management teams in the future with healthy competition.

"We are excited to utilize available technology to encourage our management staff to increase their activity levels," said Wendy Hantelman, Director of HR and coordinator of this program.  "Most people can relate to the fact that when exercise is involved, accountability is the make or break piece.  The Nike Fuel Band is a way for us to hold each other accountable and make it fun at the same time!"

This challenge comes as the second piece of a yearlong goal to help make employees healthier. Scotty's began working with First Person Benefit Advisors recently introduced a Health Savings Account program for their employees. To kick of the initiative employees received a $300 deposit after doing a wellness exam with their physician.

"The cost of healthcare is obviously rising and the biggest way to fight it is to stay healthy," added Hantelman. "This is our first year working with First Person Benefit Advisors and they have been very helpful in the role out and execution of our wellness platform."

Even though the official challenge doesn't being until July 1st employees are already using the Nike+ Fuel bands and are excited about exercising.

"I have been testing this for over a week," said Brandi Large Guest and Staff Relations Coordinator. "It is a whole new way to motivate you. Not only do track what you did during a workout, but you can also track your day to day walking or basic physical activity."

Runner

"I find myself constantly looking down at my wrist, pushing the Fuel+ button and looking to see how many points I've earned, steps I've taken and calories I've burned.  I may have to put a treadmill at my desk now," said Wise, jokingly.

If you are interested in joining the Scotty's team you can apply by filling out our entire online application here, or start out by filling out our quick mobile application here.

Wow! What a fabulous, innovative idea and what a great job perk! I worked in the restaurant industry through college and a few years after. I would have LOVED to work at Scotty's. I just started working out with a personal trainer and wish I worked somewhere that reimbursed me for it! Part of the reason we like going to Scotty's so much is because of the friendly, happy staff. Knowing that Scotty's is proactive in keeping its employees healthy explains why it's staff seems to like working there so much. Keep up the great work!

This is a great idea! Companies can provide gym memberships, but without the motivation to actually USE the membership it doesn't do the company, or the employees, any good. I think using Nike+ Fuelbands is a great way to motivate employees! Just having the band on your wrist is a constant reminder to spend a little time being active each day, which not only improves physical health, but mental health as well! Not to mention veryone loves a little competition, especially when it involves a cool new toy! Keep up the great work, Scott (& team)! You guys are great!

I work for a small business owner and am not provided health benefits, as the expense is just too much. We are given the opportunity to join a gym and that cost is picked up by our company. I applaud you for supporting a healthy lifestyle!

I've been using the Nike+ system for around 2 years now (the shoe insert style, not the fancy fuel bands) and find it to be a very gratifying and quantifiable way of improving your fitness. For me, it leads right into my mindset as a computer gamer and seeing the points add up and the chance to "level up" is great! Personal testimony, i've lost about 20 punds (more to go though), am currently at 349, 788 fuel points and a little over 400 miles from reaching the "purple" level. I wish all of you the best of luck and hope that you enjoy making it a part of your daily life!

I appreciate a company encouranging and supporting their employees in their fitness efforts. I started a fitness boot camp June 1- shocked, right? I went to a fundraising lunch for the Back on My Feet Foundation. I heard from homeless beginning to run, workout and change their life. I realized I had a lot going for me and if they could do it then I could too. I've never been able begin myself and the boot camp w others is a good motivation for me.

This is awesome! It is a great incentive to your employees and a great way to get them healthy!! It shows you care not only as "the boss" but as a person and friend in your employees lives which anymore is hard to find in alot of places.

I would love to have one of these simply b.c around here it is always hard to find someone to walk/run with or even finding a workout buddy to keep you accountable for working out. Having one of these crazy things I would become OCD in trying to improve my points from the day before...ha!! I'd be curious to see how many points it is for Zumba...an hour of sweating your butt off has to give some major points!

I am a veterinary technician, work 12+ hours a day on my feet, and wrestle with lots of dogs and cats daily. I think this is a really great idea. You are truly a mastermind of the social media marketing generation. Adding good health to the mix is a wonderful way to get people motivated. I wondered if you had thought about adding a "sub this for that" area on the menu to show a lower calorie option for some of the Wise restaurants' favorite dishes? I know of the gluten -free portion of the menu but don't remember there being a "light options" page. Just a thought! I love that Scott finds it imperative to incorporate fitness into every day life. Many people do not realize that IT IS possible to find balance. In life, many people look at going to the gym and staying active as a chore, but it does not have to be! From walking around the block and exploring the neighborhood, to working off your frustrations at kickboxing class - exercising is refreshing and fun! It is inspiring to hear the dedication that Scott has towards health and his desire to help others discover his passion and obtain success in their own lives. Those Nike Fuelbands will show you how all things that you consider to be small endeavors can add up to be large strides forward in your overall health. Excellent idea!

The thing that I struggle with for a work-out routine is the social component. I have a YMCA membership, but I really need a group of work-out partners to help motivate, hold accountable, and push me. I've linked my twitter account (@hust0058). Let me know if you're interested in the Broad Ripple area. The NIKE+ Fuelband would help, too.

    Hi Scott,

As a graduate from Purdue in health and fitness, this is a great idea! It not only makes for healthy and happy employees, it also cuts back on a campanys insurance costs! I waited tables to put myself through school and I wish the places I worked were this encouraging and motivating! People dont realize the physical and mental stress that the restaurant industry can put on a person. As an entrepreneur, wellness programs in represents should be a must. I was fortunate enough to meet you when you came to speak to my capstone class for my entrepreneurship certificate last year at Purdue and I'm excited to see the progress you've made since then! The fuel band is an awesome idea and will not only make your employees see how much physical activity they accomplish, but also the general public will realize how us servers, food runners, etc work our butts off to make sure they have an excellent experience!! Keep up the good work Scotty!!

Excellent initiative Scott. I think everyone could use a little extra motivation to live a healthier life. What better motivation than a "bracelet" to wear everyday? While it takes more than physical activity to live a healthy lifestyle (yes I have a hard time saying no to fill chips and waffle fries at Scotty's) I feel having a physical activity tracker on the person would also be a great reminder to make healthy eating decisions as well. This is an amazing product and will hopefully help more Americans take an extra step toward a healthier lifestyle.

Thanks to Scott and the crew for providing this opportunity and a healthy workplace for his crew. The Brewhouse is definitely my favorite restaurant.

This is similar to a program I had at a previous job, and it really helped to motivate all employees to strive toward better health. We used pedometers and heart rate monitors to track our activity during the day and measured our "miles" to earn money throughout the year. This was with a very large company, so I am thrilled to see a smaller company doing something to help its employees stay healthy. Now if only I could convince my boss to do it at our firm of 30 people :-) Way to go, Scotty!

    Good on you, Scott!

It's been almost 10 years since I made my body transformation: I lost 187 lbs. In just under 3 years by simply changing the way I lived: food, activities, everything. I was 389lbs at my heaviest.

I wish these types of tools were around when I was losing my weight. I never weighed myself, but used fat calipers in its stead. A combo of that and watching my belt get tighter kept me going!

I hope all of your management team puts these to great use and see amazing results!

This is a very interesting idea. I like the whole adding money to the HSA's. What about the employee's with pre-existing conditions that HAVE TO go to the doctor? They don't get to choose whether to go or not.
"We encourage a healthy life style, we give more cash in your HSA for participating to make your lifestyle healthier with better choices and exercise and then letting the employee choose whether a doctor visit is necessary or keeping money in their account for other future use is a great way to mediate the health care system."
Are the people with pre-existing conditions penalized for going to the doctor?
Other than that, I find the Fuel Ban could be a lot of fun for your team to use.

I come home, walk three more miles and then do strength training for at least half an hour. I love my exercise and my classes do too. When my class goes outside or inside the gym to walk they are always mark their cards. They don't want to miss any days of school because they don't want to be behind in their miles. LOVE THIS!! A gym membership just isn't in the budget right now, but getting off your butt is always free! Now if there was only a diet version of the Southwestern Sirloin burger :)

Great way to motivate employees to not only work well, but live well too. This is a great concept that more workplces should invest in.

This is how tomorrows issues are resolved: creative linked with technology. Partisan bickering won't solve it, but personal responsibility linked with a little competition = win, win, win!

This has been an amazing beginning to the health interest of my hubby, and SBH/3WM employee. I absolutely love to ask other SBH employees how much Fuel they've earned, or number of steps they've had in their work day. At the Southport opening last week one manager had 22,000+ steps, and his night still had about 4 hours left to go. TRULY INSPIRATIONAL! Another Great Job by the SBH team. Inspiring employer, hopefully others jump in and realize the benefits for their employees - their health!

It's so awesome that you're doing this and inspiring so many people to be healthy. Since you're counting calories, I think it would be great if you could include the calorie counts and nutritional information of all the food at your restaurants online, so that others can do the same. Thanks for being such an inspiration, and I hope you will continue to inspire not only your employees, but your customers as well :)
