School Supplies Drive Kicks Off

School Supplies Drive Kicks Off

You remember your back-to-school shopping trips with you grabbing the best trapper keeper and the pretty folders with the care bears or racecars on them, right? How would you feel if you couldn't even afford to buy plain #2 pencils or lined paper much less specialty 'designer' supplies? An overwhelming number of students in Indiana are unable to afford school supplies, "At School #14 80% of the kids qualify for free lunch and 10% qualify for reduced lunch.  This means 90% of the families at School #14 are barely making it.  With the economy the way it is right now, we expect it to be more difficult for the families this year.  Last year we had 610 students, 549 of them came from families that struggle to make ends meet," said Josette Jackson, Community School Coordinator for the John H. Boner Community Center.

The Scotty's family is trying to make a dent in the amount of students that are without the school essentials. Now until August 22nd all Scotty's Brewhouse, Scotty's Lakehouse and Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company locations will be collecting supplies for students like those of school #14 and the Back Pack Attack program, a program that has collected over 2.8 million school supplies for Indianapolis children since 1999.

"Having their own supplies is a huge pride issue.  Children dealing with poverty never get the chance to say, 'this is mine'.  Being able to know that something is theirs is HUGE!  More than pride it is stressful for the kids and embarrassing," said Jackson, "When a teachers says take out your yellow notebook and the child knows they don't have any notebooks the child has a choice.  1. They can swallow hard and get embarrassed and tell the teacher they don't have it.  2. Cause a disruption so no one notices that they don't have it and may end up in the office where they don't need a yellow notebook. 3. Or steal someone else's.  None of these are pleasant.  Kids want to learn.  Giving them supplies encourages them to learn productively."

For every donation you make you receive a free order of dill chips and also can feel better about making a difference in a child's life right in your backyard.

Even one item can make a difference in a child's life:

Scotty's Interns Work Hard and Play Hard

Scotty's Interns Work Hard And Play Hard

It starts with a calling: Scotty's Brewhouse looking for an intern for the summer/fall/spring semester.  It continues with a response: intern responsibilities, resume, cover letter. It becomes real with an interview. Then, it ends with, "Congratulations! You've got the job."

This may be the dumb downed version of the internship process at Scotty's Brewhouse but what a person can gain from this experience is so much more.

"A true quality that makes an intern successful is the ability for them to ask questions, said Director of Marketing and Promotions," Lauren Fiedler. "Nothing is worse then an intern who doesn't understand something but doesn't ask, you're here to learn and we're here to teach you."

Scotty's offers an entrepreneurial mindset with a focus in customer service like no other company could offer. Interns represent all Scotty's concepts, existing and future establishments, to make sure the customer's voice is heard. They monitor the @SBH_RavingFans twitter handle to make sure every person who dines with Scotty's is a raving fan of the food, the service, and the atmosphere.

"I will definitely take away some of the overarching ideas in how to use social media to form relationships with customers," said Summer 2011 Marketing Intern, Adam Ganyard. "It's a new concept that I think we're going to see a lot more of in the future, and having experienced it with a company like Scotty's, it will definitely be something I can put on my resume."

Interns learn the ins and outs of social media through utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, and Foursquare to reach out to customers.

Also, interns have access to all Scotty's ad campaigns and promotional contests. They help promote the events using social media and help events run smoothly. Interns were present at the 10k follower contest where Scotty's celebrated 10,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter. They helped monitor submissions on the Facebook page with participants wearing Scotty's shirts. On the big day, interns were at Conseco Fieldhouse cheering and taking pictures of participants who were attempting the half court shot. Congrats to the winner!

"Working for Scotty's Brewhouse has given me multiple samples for my portfolio and countless contacts for references and networking," said Summer 2011 Marketing Intern, Megan Gish. "I entered the Scotty's family nervous and unsure of my abilities and I'm leaving with new friends and the confidence to offer new ideas and better practices to complete tasks."

Fiedler has a unique understanding of the company, as she was a Scotty's intern before she took on the role of Director of Marketing and Promotions.

"This company has been a great experience for me. I am challenged daily in what I do and am always learning," said Fiedler.

Scotty's is constantly looking for interns to join their team. They are currently looking for interns with experience in social media/marketing field. The internship would begin right away. Contact Lauren Fiedler at lfiedler@scottysbrewhouse if you are interested in this experience.
