Scotty's Lends A Helping Hand To The Joplin Outlaws

June 2011.   On May 22nd, winds ranging from 166 and 200 mph produced an EF-4 tornado, the second strongest classification. According to ABC News, the tornado in Joplin, Mo. is considered the deadliest tornado in nearly 60 years.

Thousands are homeless and 6 miles of homes, neighborhood schools and parks were devastated. Those trying to pick up the pieces don't know which way to turn with debris surrounding the city.

Mark Rains, general manager of the Joplin Outlaws, the town's nonprofit summer collegiate baseball team, knows what he can do with a city rich in baseball history with Mickey Mantle and the "Commerce Comet" having careers here.

The Joplin Outlaws team members worked to clean up the debris. According to ABC News, they cleared a tee-ball park and the Little League field outside Joplin High School.

The team is not done giving back; they waived the admission fee to their games all season and are offering a free two-day camp for the kids of Joplin, waving the normal $30 fee.

With the loss of revenue, it will be difficult for the team to fund the kid's camp. However, in an interview with ABC News Radio, Rains put out the call: "We're looking for donations of gloves, balls and bats for the youth of Joplin, Mo."

"I like to help the local communities that our restaurants are located in; but, occasionally something just falls on my heart and makes me want to do more for others.  We have raised money for Katrina victims, families of the 9/11 tragedy, people in Haiti and many other causes that needed assistance.  I was driving down the road listening to a story on ESPN Radio about The Joplin Outlaws.  When I got home, I went to see if they had a Facebook page and posted a message there asking if they needed any more assistance.  The GM, Mark Raines, emailed me and said they could use more help.  And, so began this campaign to help Joplin rebuild their lives, sometimes even through sports," said Scott Wise, CEO and President of Scotty's Brewhouse.

Scott Wise is answering the call. Now we turn to you.

Scotty's Brewhouse locations are asking for donations of youth mitts, balls, bats and anything baseball related for the children of Joplin. For every donation brought in you will receive a free order of dill chips.

Remember: Think Globally, Drink Locally. And help the people of Joplin.

Celebrating Craft Beer Week

Happy Craft Beer Week: May 16 - May 22! Here at Scotty's we are celebrating the best of American beer.  According to CraftBeer.com, "American Craft Beer Week will see official events hosted in all 50 states, making it the largest-ever celebration of U.S. craft brewers."

Help us celebrate America and celebrate beer! This week enjoy $4 pints Monday thru Thursday at all Scotty's Brewhouse and Scotty's Lakehouse locations. At Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company, enjoy $6 growler refills all week long and $3 pints Sunday thru Thursday. Like you needed an excuse.

American Craft Beer Week began in 2006 with 124 breweries hosted events and the U.S. Congress passed House Resolution 753. The resolution states that the House of Representatives "supports the establishment of American Craft Beer Week as a celebration of the contributions that American craft brewers have made to the Nation's communities, economy, and history."

Finally, in 2010 with a great increase in participation (341 breweries hosted 621 events), the U.S. Congress passed House Resolution 1297. The resolution states that the House of Representatives "encourages beer-lovers of the United States to celebrate American Craft Beer Week through events at microbreweries, brewpubs, and beer stores across the United States to appreciate the accomplishments of craft brewers."

I mean Congress is even encouraging you to drink beer this week, don't want to disappoint them. (Not that Congress will bail you out when you don't show up to work Thursday morning due to your brew hangover)

Go ahead, sign the Declaration of Beer Independence, which states, "I declare the beer I choose to enjoy is not a commodity, but more importantly an artistic creation of living liquid history made from passionate innovators." www.craftbeer.com

We Won! He Cried.

Scott Wise accepted the MIRA New Media Excellence award Saturday night at the 12th annual Techpoint MIRA awards gala hosted at the Indianapolis J.W. Marriott.

The MIRA awards look to identify the more innovative technology companies in the Indiana market. "The startup environment and tech sector as a whole in Indiana is stronger than ever because our tech sector has developed a deep and interesting sense of innovation and entrepreneurship," said Wil Davis, past chairman of TechPoint, who delivered opening remarks at this year's Mira Awards. "We're not just "doing pretty good for Indiana" anymore. We've kicked that "aw-shucks" mentality to the curb and planted our leadership flag on the global stage."

The 11 representatives of the Scotty's family took their seats at the Techpoint MIRA awards, watching numerous extraordinary tech companies win award after award. Then it was time to announce the winner of the New Media Excellence and Innovation category. It was announced they would split the category into two New Media Excellence and New Media Innovation, doubling Scotty's chances. Then it was announced Scotty's had been voted the company with the best New Media Innovation. Shocked Scott Wise walked to the stage, choking back tears.

"We looked at the communication challenges and market needs addressed by each of the nominees.  While not a tech company, Scott Wise and the entire Brewhouse team do a great job using technology, pushing the limits. They have an integrated approach moving seamlessly from Facebook and Twitter to mobile and web applications," said Lorraine Ball, MIRA Award Judge and CEO of RoundPeg Marketing.

"I was honored to even be sitting in the same room as the technology giants of the industry.  I think Indianapolis has become the "Google of the Midwest" - our own Silicon Valley, or Silicon Farm Field with the likes of Exact Target, Slingshot SEO and all the incredible startups we have in our community.  For me to be recognized by Techpoint was so humbling and, honestly, gave me some validity to my "madness."  As I told Jim Jay that night, I'm not a programmer, hacker or developer and never will be.  But, I love being on the edge of technologies usefulness for business - whether it is for marketing or operations - I think what I was/am good at is maybe just seeing where and how that fits in my business and not being afraid to implement technology as an early adopter.  That alone cut out a niche for us in Indianapolis.  We were recognized by the tech community and now play host or "guinea pig" to events, groups and beta testing.  Thankfully, I have two people and several others on my staff dedicated to taking my "madness" and help bring the ideas to life.  Bruce McClain and Lauren Fielder deserve recognition too," said Scott Wise, CEO of Scotty's Brewhouse.

Where is Scotty's going next in the New Media world? "I always tell the groups I speak to that ask this kind of question, I will use technology to always improve the lives of my employees and my guests.  It has to make life easier, faster or reduce an expense for the guest or the company.  Right now we are implementing the use of QR Bar Codes.  I think these have some benefit and I'm anxious to see where they go.  We are customizing our Facebook page.  And, we are looking at trying to do some proprietary geo-location "Foursquare-esque" applications for smart phones that would be exclusive to just our restaurants.  I am like a clown at the circus, I like to juggle a lot of technology bowling pins," said Wise.

Scotty's Lakehouse Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary;

Next Scotty's Location To Be In Columbus

April 2011.
Scotty's Lakehouse in the Fishers/Geist area has carved out a niche not only in the neighborhood, but in the eco-friendly burger market.  And, in doing so, gained popularity among the residents of Hamilton County. They will be celebrating their 1-year anniversary on April 22, 2011.

"It's hard to express what this year has meant to me personally.  I am so proud to have been a major part in helping shape the identity of Scotty's Lakehouse.  It has been an incredible opportunity for me and I am so proud of the success we have experienced.  I'm extremely thankful to every host, cook, server, shift leader, corporate team member and dish guy that was directly responsible for making this restaurant thrive this year," said Arec Simeri, Manager at Scotty's Lakehouse.

lakehouse"The Lakehouse concept was such a breath of fresh 'restaurateuring' for me to get involved in," said Scott Wise, President/CEO of a Pots & Pans Production, LLC (the management company for Scotty's Brewhouse, Scotty's Lakehouse and Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co.)  "I got to take something I love (burgers) and something that is important to me even more now with children of my own (the environment/earth) and really focus in on both."

The Scotty's Lakehouse concept was built as the first eco-friendly restaurant in the Scotty's family. "To help promote a healthy environment, we [Scotty's Lakehouse] recycle and we try our hardest to get menus, to-go cups, straws and to-go containers that are biodegradable or compostable. In the kitchen we even have separate trashcans for recyclables, compost and trash. Being able to send our compost to Lone Pine Farm to turn into feed is very helpful in our mission. When I am looking for new menu items I look to stay local, organic and working with things in season to highlight," said Angie Vosmeier, Director of Menu Development.

A local farm, Lone Pine Farm, is the main meat provider to the restaurant and also reaps the benefits of a green restaurant. "The table scraps we bring back to our farm provide an authentic, total recycling of post consumer products.  The scraps are first sifted through by our 1,500 pasture raised laying hens, who particularly like the dill chips, and then is worked into our ground with a carbonous material such as saw dust or straw," said Adam Moody, owner of Lone Pine Farm.

According to Moody there are 3 main reasons for keeping your food dollar local.

#1.  Keeps your dollar in the community or state.  Scotty's Lakehouse could purchase a lower quality, ground beef cheaper from an out of state food service provider.  However, they choose to utilize Lone Pine Farm which employs 28 Indiana locals plus other farmers they buy from right here in central Indiana.

#2.  Provides a greener product with less food miles.  The ground beef provided to Scotty's Lakehouse has traveled around 50 - 60 miles. This compares with anywhere between 350 -1,500 miles from other meat purveyors.

#3.  Quality.  From the get go Scotty's Lakehouse wanted to purchase the finest ground beef available, period. No compromise.  Because Lone Pine Farm controls their product from gate to plate, dry-aged quality is attained, not something for which we merely strive.

Scotty's Lakehouse will be celebrating their 1-year anniversary and Earth Day Friday, April 22. All day long you can bring a bag full of recyclables (aluminum, paper, plastics, etc.) and receive a free order of dill chips along with the ability to bring your unused electronics for recycling. All electronics donated will be refurbished or recycled by Goodwill Industries, which will lead to jobs in the community.

To finish off the night Scotty's Lakehouse is tapping some new brews. Starting at 6pm you can enjoy the tapping of five of the original brews from Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company including Two Lucy's Blackberry Wheat, Golden Zoe IPA, Centennial Martyr Double IPA, Snow Bunny Blonde and Hubbard & Cravens Porter. Don't like brew? They will also be offering $6 Organic liquor U-Calls, liquors that are distilled from organically grown ingredients along with eco-friendly packaging.

As Scotty's Lakehouse celebrates their first year in business, the Scotty's family continues to grow. On April 18, 2011 it was announced that Scotty's will open their next location in Columbus, IN at The Commons. "We looked at Columbus as a potential location in 2003.  At the time, it just didn't seem like the right fit and we didn't have the capital for growth.  Fast forward 8 years and we run into the same people that we talked to about it in 2003; but, now The Commons Mall has an $18 million dollar facelift, Cummins has expanded and we are better prepared for growth entering our 8th restaurant venture, which all make this, in my opinion, the perfect equation for success," said Wise.

The new restaurant will be a blend of two of the current Scotty's concepts, Scotty's Lakehouse and Scotty's Brewhouse. "[We wanted] to give our Columbus location the variety of a Brewhouse menu, but also, the focus and attention to sustainability, organic, natural and local sourcing of a Lakehouse menu.  We will compost food scraps, be actively involved in recycling all our waste products and source as much product as we can from local farms and fruit markets," said Wise.

Scotty's looks forward to opening their newest location and getting involved in the Columbus community. The grand opening is tentatively set for the end of the summer 2011.

Scotty's Brewhouse hosts Foursquare Day After Party

A simple red ball and four squares drawn out of chalk during recess…this is how we know the game four square from our childhoods. Today however, Foursquare is a worldwide phenomenon of location-based check-ins through the use of smart phones.

Scotty's Brewhouse has been one of the many businesses to use this technology to their benefit.

"We can now interact easier with those who come into our restaurant. They check in, we respond and ask how their visit was," said Scott Wise, CEO of Scotty's Brewhouse.  "It is a modern day loyalty card, if used correctly by the retailer, attached to your smart phone.  You can create repeat business by offering specials and discounts to Foursquare users via check-ins."

Scotty's Brewhouse, Scotty's Lakehouse and Thr3e Wise Men Brewing company offer discounts to those who check in, a 10% discount off lunch Monday through Thursday, $5 off of a $25 carryout order and the mayor receives 10% off all the time.

"There's a reason Scotty's Brewhouse is the number one Foursquare destination in Indianapolis. Scotty's moves seamlessly between online and offline promotion, rewarding members of the social community for sharing the love. The pickles are good, too," said Lorraine Ball, Owner of Roundpeg, a marketing firm in Indianapolis.

On April 16 2011, starting after the official 4sqDay Conference at 4:44pm, Scotty's Brewhouse will be celebrating National Foursquare Day at their downtown Indianapolis location. Foursquare Day is the first social-media holiday created and the 16th of April was chosen due to the fact that when you square the number four you get sixteen.

"We really couldn't be happier to have the foursquare day after party at Scotty's Brewhouse. Scott Wise and the Brewhouse franchise are a perfect example of how foursquare can be used by a business to reach out to their clientele and drive customer loyalty," said Chris Banks, President and Founder of 4sqIndy.

The Coors Light girls will also be in attendance and passing out free swag while customers are set up to play foursquare. "We're bringing back the game of four square, old school style, we will be setting up four square courts on the patio and encourage guests to play," said Bruce McClain, Scotty's Brewhouse Director of Technology.

scottys_FOURSQUAREDAY_HOMEPAGE

If you don't want to play but want to watch you also can be rewarded. If you check into Scotty's Brewhouse on Foursquare and show your server during lunch you will receive 10% off your lunch! Also, if you check in between 4:44pm and 6pm you can get an order of brew-homemade dill chips for $4. If you are one of the first 50 people to check-in after 4:44pm you will win an empty Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company growler. Scotty's Brewhouse will also offer $4 domestic pints all day long.

Are you the mayor of one of the Scotty's Brewhouse locations? Show up downtown Indianapolis on April 16th and receive a congratulatory prize!

Scotty's Brewhouse Celebrates 10 Years in Bloomington

BtownLOGO

April 2011. "I remember someone telling me after I opened, 'if you can make it in B-Town, you can open a restaurant anywhere," said Scotty Wise, President/CEO of Scotty's Brewhouse.

Back in 2001, the decision of where to open the next Scotty's Brewhouse location was between the cities of Bloomington and West Lafayette, Indiana. Scotty's Brewhouse current COO, 14 year employee and friend of Scotty's, Eric Schamp, bleeds Cream and Crimson and knew where he wanted to go.

"When I was deciding between the two, Eric [Schamp] told me that, if I opened in West Lafayette, he would rather be passed over than take his promotion to be a general manager and partner," said Wise.

So the decision on the 2nd location was determined.  Schamp and Wise headed to Bloomington to stake out the next location.

"When we first went down to Bloomington to look at possible locations, we parked at 7th and Walnut and walked to go look at places such as the Gables and the Von Lee Theatre. Little did we know at the time that the place we would end up choosing was right where we parked to begin with," said Wise.

The Bloomington store not only was the beginning of the Brewhouse growth across the state, it also marked the beginning of the company's shift to being smoke-free. When opening the location in 2001, the city had passed a law that new restaurants must be smoke-free but existing restaurants could continue to operate as "smoking establishments" for 2 more years.

"I took the entire company smoke-free in 2003 due to the successes and uniqueness this offered our guests stemming from the Bloomington opening," said Wise.  "It was one of the greatest achievements in our company to this date, in my opinion."

Schamp opened the store in 2001 with determination and hope, knowing the adventure he was about to embark on, and he still looks back with pride today.

"Our loyal staff and management team have built such a strong relationship with the community since 2001.  It's hard to believe that it has already been 10 years since we opened," said Schamp.

Schamp's parents helped co-sign a loan for $50,000 that Wise asked of all his GM's so they could invest and become partners in the business venture.

"I remember Eric telling me that his parents were doing this and for the first time, I felt the pressure to succeed to not let myself down, but, to also not let down Eric's parents," said Wise.

Many employees have fond memories of the last 10 years at the Scotty's Brewhouse Bloomington location, including Tyler Thompson, now the V.P. of Operations, who was, in 2001, the Assistant General Manager.

"One of the best times was when IU went to the Final 4. No one expected very much from the Hoosiers that year and they shocked everyone by beating Duke," said Thompson.  "The day of the National Championship game, we had guests lined up to get a seat before we opened. Some people brought decks of cards to keep themselves entertained, as they knew they had 10+ hours before the game even tipped off."

Scotty's Brewhouse in Bloomington has seen 3 basketball and 3 football coaches come and go since 2001.  They even hosted both of the Coach's Radio Shows at the restaurant the first several years.

"I think back to the beginning of our opening and how much support we received from our guests.  Our relationship with our guests is the reason we are successful and we will always recognize that no matter how many years go by.  We want to say thank you to the community for a great 10 years," Schamp said.

The first portion of the Bloomington 10 year anniversary celebration will be April 10-16 to coincide with the Little 500 festivities. During this week, Scotty's will be offering a deal a day, excluding Friday and Saturday.

Bloom1yr ANNI_HOME

This doesn't end the celebration, though. Another celebration is in the works for September, 2011, when the students have returned for the fall semester, to commemorate the actual month of the store's opening in 2001.

"We figured one celebration just isn't enough.  Why not celebrate twice and give out twice as many perks to our loyal guests?," said Amber Martin, Director of Beverage and Promotions.

'Brew'pon

If you're like me, as a consumer, you are an avid Groupon, Living Social, Eversave, etc. deal buyer. I even spend money on things I don't necessarily need, like today's Groupon offer, who wouldn't want to ride in the chicken limo for cheap? Do I need a ride in the chicken limo? No. Do I want a ride in the chicken limo? Yes, please!

With all the hoopla around the deal buying we at Scotty's have decided to start our own 'Brew'pon. From now until April 17th if you buy a $50 gift card online or in-store to any of our locations, including Scotty's Lakehouse and Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company, you will get it for $40. This is one of those deals that you can't pass up on for many reasons:

Log on to www.scottysbrewhouse.com and get your 'brew'pon on.

*Gift Cards cannot be used the same day as purchase

Spring Has Sprung (well almost)

When you think of spring the grass is green, the sun is shining, patios are open and the baseball diamonds are seeing action. I don't know about you but I love this time of year. The baseball season is about to start and (hopefully after this freak snow storm) I can spend time outside instead of being stuck indoors 24/7.

What goes great with baseball? Hot dogs. Cub's will kick off the season on April 1st at 1:20pm against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Scotty's Brewhouse will be rolling out a new line of Waygu hot dogs, just in time for the season. Each one will have its own unique twist on the basic dog, available grilled or deep-fried.

The Cobb Dog

A dog for the cobb salad lover. It comes topped with iceberg lettuce, diced tomato, bacon and bleu cheese dressing all on a pretzel bun.

Spring Cleaning

Scotty's Lakehouse is doing a little spring-cleaning to their brunch menu and prices are going down! They will now have a brunch menu similar to the Scotty's Brewhouse brunch menu, with a few lakehouse twists. Items from biscuits and gravy to Cinnamon Toast Crunch French toast will now be available at the Geist restaurant.

Some new items? A huevos rancheros sausage sammich includes a sausage patty, brew-homemade salsa, fried egg and Fair Oaks farms 2-year aged cheddar served on a toasted potato bun. You can also now build your own omelet along with creating your own $5 Mo'Fo' Marys on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9am to 1pm.

The little ones have their own options from pancakes to cereal. Don't forget kids eat FREE at Scotty's Lakehouse from 9am - 4pm on Saturdays!

Congrats Texas A&M Lady Aggies!

Scotty's Brewhouse downtown Indianapolis will be the host location for the Texas A&M Lady Aggies. There will be a heated tent Saturday through Tuesday on the patio with TV's to watch all the action inside or out.

Come cheer on the Butler Bulldogs at any Scotty's Brewhouse, Scotty's Lakehouse or Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Company location! The game will be playing at all stores!

Being Part of The Scotty's Family

March 14, 2011

When it comes to the restaurant industry you tend to see a lot of employee turnover. There are the students who just need some work during their summer or the professional who just wants to pick up a few weekends to get a little extra spending cash. It's no secret that servers, hosts, cooks and other restaurant workers usually work for a restaurant for a little while and then move on. The statistics on the Scotty's employee retention is surprising for the industry.

We have 109 employees that are going on their 2nd year with our company.

We have 66 employees that are going on their 3rd year with our company.

We have 15 employees that are going on their 4th year with our company.

We have 17 employees that are going on their 5th year with our company.

We have 8 employees that are going on their 6th year with our company.

We have 2 employees that are going on their 10th year with our company.

We have 4 employees that are going on their 11th year with our company.

We have 1 employee going on his 14th year with our company.

We have 1 employee going on his 15th year with our company.

What is this due to? The atmosphere. When you work at Scotty's you feel as if you are a part of one big family. You work together, play together and help each other out when you are going through a rough time.

Recently a server at one of the Scotty's Brewhouse locations fell ill and is having a hard time making ends meet due to not having family close by or health insurance. What did the Scotty's family do? Started up a fund to try and help her with the costs. How many restaurants do you know that band together like that to try and help their own?

Scotty's also offers some additional benefits that usually aren't offered including scholarship programs, health club membership reimbursement and employee parties.

Best news? We are hiring! If you are interested in being a part of the Scotty's family apply here:

Don't believe us? Hear it straight from our store employees!

" I really like working at Scotty's because all of the staff parties and special events we get to go to," said Tiffany Leffel, hostess at Scotty's Lakehouse and Scotty's Brewhouse.

"I love Scottys because you get to hand out candy like red hots and you make a lot of friends and it is a great experience," said Neza Refuku, server at Scotty's Brewhouse.

Think Pink With The Big Ten

March 2, 2011

This Sunday at Conseco Fieldhouse the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament will be holding their games in support of breast cancer research and awareness. The teams will be wearing pink and are urging fans to do the same.

When you walk into Scotty's Brewhouse in downtown Indianapolis, the Official Purdue Alumni Headquarters, this weekend you will be greeted by staff sporting pink ribbons.

Breakfast, Just Brew It

February 17, 2011

If you're like me, you need breakfast to make it through the day. I'm one of those people where the first thing I think of when I wake up is food. Yes, I know this means I am probably in the right industry considering I am surrounded by delicious food and smells all day long. Usually during the week I'm stuck with the average bowl of cereal or quick bagel but during the weekend I actually get to explore breakfast options and you should too.

According to ChaCha.com, "Four out of ten people disregard eating breakfast daily which is the most important meal of the day. It boosts your metabolism." Scotty's offers something for every taste palate, including a $5 bloody mary bar (not available at Muncie Scotty's Brewhouse location).

You Know You're From Indiana When...

New Brewery Opens in Broad Ripple

Jan 17, 2011

When driving down the Broad Ripple strip a revamped building will catch your eye adorning the name Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co.

building

From the same company that brought you Scotty's Brewhouse and Scotty's Lakehouse, comes the newest venture, a brewery that will brew 7 new original craft beers.

Named after CEO of the company and his two sons, the project has been on the back burner since the opening of the first Scotty's Brewhouse in Muncie, "It was the original intent of my entire business plan when I opened in 1996.  I saw an explosion in craft beer around 1995 and loved it.  I traveled to Bloomington Brewing Company and met with Jeff Mease about what it would entail.  After a lot of research, the empty pockets of a 22 year old with no collateral would not allow for the dream to happen.  So, I did the next best thing, at a time when no one else was carrying more than 3 or 4 draft beers on tap, I decided I would carry 30.  And, that became our niche.  Several years later, you can now see many restaurants and bars doing that same thing. I never let the dream die, I just "put it off" for awhile.  I thought this might be the year that we would try to focus on opening a brewery; but the intention was always to be a production facility for all 5 or 6 other Scotty's Brewhouse restaurants exclusively.  I thought we would be located 'off the beaten path' in a low rent district of the city that would have easy highway access for our own delivery needs. But, like most of my ideas, they start small and grow like a kid rolling the belly of a snowman… bigger and bigger and bigger," said Scott Wise, CEO of Pots and Pans Inc.

The property, once used as a grocery store, was perfect for what Wise wanted to do.

"Our location in Broad Ripple almost 'fell in my lap' and offered all the amenities to make it a perfect fit for our company.

The pub side that can offer our beers, retail and marketing advantage of a highly populated demographic - the production side with a single loading dock to deliver to our other stores and the ability to locate our Executive offices and a Commissary for money-saving advantages in food production for all our other restaurants.

And, of course, it is in the cards now because I have a great support team around me that makes it all possible, including a world class craft brewer in Omar." said Wise.

Now open at 1021 Broad Ripple Ave, the establishment serves a variety of beers, along with pizza, breadsticks, elephant ears, salad and a few Scotty's Brewhouse favorites including dill chips and Brew-Homemade Carrot Cake.

Omar Castrellon, who previously brewed for Alcatraz Brewing Company, is the head brewer at Thr3e Wise Men Brewi

ng Co. and has helped create the following seven original craft brews:

Two Lucys Blackberry Wheat - Light-bodied blue/purple color with tart/sweet flavor and fruity aroma from Oregon blackberries

Golden Zoe IPA - Medium-bodied amber to light copper color with hoppy flavor and citrus/grapefruit aroma, from Amarillo hops

Centennial Martyr Double IPA - Bold, full-bodied, amber to medium reddish color with strong complex citrus flavor and intense citrus aroma, featuring clover honey from Hunter's Honey Farm, Martinsville, IN

King Solomon's Imperial Stout - Full-bodied, dark/black color with roasted hoppy flavor and roasted malty aroma, featuring clover honey

Nap Town Nut Brown - Medium-bodied, brown color with gentle malt flavor and a light sweet aroma, from German Spalter hops

0000234_300

Snow Bunny Blonde - Light-bodied, light gold color with malty, subtle hops flavor and medium grassy aroma

Hoggy Style Amber - Medium-bodied, deep amber color with a gentle malt flavor and a sweet and spicy aroma, from German Spalter hops

Hubbard & Cravens Porter - Medium-bodied, brown color with mild roast coffee flavor and chocolate/caramel aroma, from Hubbard & Cravens Coffee

All Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co.'s draft beers are available for carryout in 64oz. glass growlers and 1/6 barrel kegs. Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. also offers various craft bottled beers for carryout in an effort to encourage and support fellow independent breweries. Want to learn more about the brewery? THE TAX SYSTEM EXPLAINED IN BEER

David R. Kamerschen, Ph.D. Professor of Economics.
  December 10, 2010

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100...

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this...

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do..

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20". Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men ? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,"but he got $10!"

"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!"

"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!"

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed.

For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.

Although the Scotty's Brewhouse in downtown Indianapolis will be closed on Thanksgiving Day it will still be filled with tasty aromas and hungry guests. This year Scotty's will be opening its doors to the local Salvation Army and Dayspring shelter along with local families going through a rough time.

"A free warm holiday meal means everything to the ladies and children living in our shelter. First of all, it gives them something to look forward to.  Secondly, it gives them an opportunity to get out of the shelter and eat somewhere different.  And third, I think it really gives our clients hope and reassurance that people do care about them, they are not forgotten and they are important," said Julia Sloope of the Salvation Army.

Scotty's is ready for a room filled of hungry people ready to eat, "We will be serving 80 pounds of boneless turkey roast, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, cupcakes, yams, stuffing and much more," said Amber Martin, Promotions Director for Scotty's Brewhouse.

The food is being donated by a variety of suppliers including Sysco Indianapolis, Piazza, Hubbard and Cravens, The Flying Cupcake and more.

"Piazza was honored by the opportunity to partner with one of our valued clients to provide Thanksgiving dinner to those in need.  We were excited by the initiative taken by Scotty's to organize this event.  Contributing to the dinner provided us with an opportunity to support our customer while ensuring that those in need were provided with an opportunity to enjoy a warm Thanksgiving dinner.  While we are always thankful for the things with which we have been blessed, Thanksgiving is a special time of year when we can reflect on all of our blessings, while doing what we can to share those blessings with others," said Antonia Mascari, Sales and Marketing Consultant for Piazza.

Scotty's employees and their families will be donating their time to serve these special guests.

"My son recently left for basic training in the Army and I feel like that if he can make that sacrifice than I can surely can sacrifice my Thanksgiving to help those in need. It is the least that I can do. Plus, it will make me feel great to help out," said Diane Greene, Training Manager for Scotty's Lakehouse.

Miller Transportation will also be donating their services by escorting guests to and from the dinner.

Have the urge to help out? During the month of November both Indianapolis Scotty's Brewhouse locations and Scotty's Lakehouse will have donation boxes collecting items for local shelters and Indy School on Wheels. For a complete list visit: /brewhouse-xtras/brewhouse-blog

School on Wheels is an educational tutoring and assistance program that works with the homeless children of Indianapolis.

"Many kids' after-school routine consists of sitting down at the kitchen table to work on homework with someone who cares about them.  Our kids come home to a shelter, don't have a kitchen table to work from, and often don't have parents that can help.  Our volunteers work with the kids daily to keep them on track and focused on education - believing that education is the only way to break the cycle of homelessness," said Nathan Hand, VP of Development for School on Wheels.

School on Wheels is requesting donations for child-sized uniform pants, polo shirts and belts in typical uniform colors including navy, white, black and khaki. "These donated items mean the world to our kids. School uniform policies help keep all kids looking similar and not distracted by labels, privilege or other clothing issues.  However, those that can't afford them can be sent home, disciplined or even suspended. So, a new uniform means the child can not only attend school, but have pride in themselves and in their education," said Hand. To learn more about School on Wheels, donate or volunteer, please visit www.indysow.org, follow them on Twitter @IndySOW or call 317.202.9100.
